Academic activities

Activities in our School

  • Reading Buddies - The children in 5th and 6th class are paired up with the children in Junior and Senior Infants and First class. The younger children read a selection of books to and with their more senior buddies. This promotes a positive attitude to reading and makes the reading process a fun and appealing activity. During the last academic year in June 2010, as the weather was so good the children were brought outside to engage in the reading buddies programme in the fresh air. It proved to be a huge success among the children.

  • Phonics Workshops - The school has adopted the Jolly Phonics approach to teaching the children how to read. This approach is a synthetic approach to learning alphabetic sounds as it encourages children to use all of their senses when learning their sounds. The children love the programme which involves stories, activity sheets, jolly jingles, songs, drama, games and lots more.

  • Maths Workshops - It is hoped that this academic year maths workshops will be carried out in some of the classes in the school. This is where once each week the children will be divided into six groups. During one power hour of maths each group will take part in 6 activities for 10 minutes. These activities will cover the strands of the curriculum in a fun, fast and stimulating manner. Hopefully this approach will adopt a positive attitude among children to mathematical activities.
